High School Basketball Star Murdered in Case of Mistaken Identity

Tayshana Murphy was a high school basketball star who was shot and killed in nyc

A high school basketball star was shot and killed in a New York housing project Sunday night.  Her family believes that it was a case of mistaken identity.

Tayshana (Chicken) Murphy was just 18 years old and one of the best high school basketball players in the country.  Police said that she was shot and killed in Harlem at 4:10 am.

Murphy was trying to get away from the gunman in a fourth-floor hallway of her building, begging for her life.

"She was pleading for her life," said friend Teka Taylor, 22. "She was saying, 'No, please, I don't have nothing to do with it.'"

"She said, 'Mom, I'm going to get you out of the projects,' " said Murphy's mother, Tephanie Holston. "She loved basketball, she lived and breathed basketball," Holston said.

Witnesses said that Murphy was wearing a hoody and the gunman may have thought she was a boy.  The boy that they believe was the intended target also dressed the same way and had gotten into a fight at a nearby location.

"No, no, no. I can't believe this," Murphy’s sister screamed as the van drove her dead body away.

She never lost sight of her dream of becoming a WNBA star. "That's my goal," Murphy said last year. "I want to be great."

To date, no arrests have been made in the murder.

Black on black crime? We aren't immune from being criminals.
but this crime doesn't strike me as being a mistake, but rather a hit. At 4am on a Sunday this talented young athlete should have bee asleep at home preparing to go
to church, if anything. But she wasn't. The motives for her untimely deth could have been drugs
or jealousy. I am deeply sorry for her lost life, and for the pain of her family and friends. I fervently hope her killer is caught
and prosected to the max.

Renelda Moorehead, some things are left better not said. You have no idea why the young lady was where she was.
