Coming up on August 25th will be the ten year anniversary of the fatal plane crash that claimed the lives of R&B sweetheart Aaliyah Dana Haughton and eight others.
In August 2001, following the release of her final album the previous month, the singer and eight others boarded a plane in the Bahamas after filming a music video for her single “Rock the Boat.” The pilot of this plane, Luis Morales III, was unlicensed at the time of the accident and was said to have traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Aaliyah’s family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court.
To commemorate her death, BET has chosen to launch a month long tribute called “25 Days of Aaliyah.” It started August 1rst and promises to continue to bring exclusive photos, featured music and more. It will also feature commentary from those whom lives she touched throughout her career, such as Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Damon Dash, Nadine Ellis, Patti Labelle, Kelly Rowland and more. During the last night of the tribute, on August 25th, the special “Aaliyah:One in a Million”will air at 8pm ET.
Aaliyah was only 22 years of age when she passed, but her legacy lives on through her music. Often referred to as the “Princess of R&B,” she recorded several number one R&B hits and five top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles. To this day, her music has continued to achieve commercial success with several posthumous releases.
