This past weekend I had the opportunity to see Red Tails. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. What's not to like about the Tuskegee Airmen story? A compelling story, beautiful black men, action, and war is what Red Tails is all about.

A film finally depicting Black men shown with dignity, pride, and heroism. It made me proud to see a Hollowood glammed up story about a big piece of our history. I left the theatre swooning over Nate Parker and cheering my love Aaron McGruder for his contributions to the movie.

I was surprised to wake up the next morning to learn that a group of black women are boycotting Red Tails. Their gripe with the film was the lack of Black women – more specifically, the fictional love story between Thunder and a young German woman.

Ladies, this is not a history lesson -- this is a movie for fun.

Why can't our men have a movie for themselves? This is a wonderful film for our boys and men. Do you ladies remember how excited we were when Princess and the Frog came out? Little girls finally had a princess to look up to with pride in Princess Tiana. I feel that Red Tails is a great story for our little boys and men.

It would have been great to see sisters represented in the film. We all know that the Tuskegee Airmen had the tremendous support of their mothers, wives, sisters, and girlfriends. Red Tails made mention of a wife and child when one of the young men went missing. Some of the men even rocked wedding bands – but that’s beside the point.

Sisters, this film was for our men. This film has little to do with the constant tug-of-war we choose to pursue. This was a war film with a diverse cast.

Instead of complaining about the lack of Black feminine representation, why don't we celebrate the positive representation? I read somewhere that George Lucas has two more scripts: a prequel (I’m sure there will be a need for women) and a sequel (after the war -- and again, I am sure there will be a need for women). These films can only be made if we support Red Tails!

Let's not miss out on an awesome opportunity to support some of our finest black actors.

A mom was entirely fed up with her son's behavior. Feeling that she'd run out of options, she then made the decision to humiliate her son in the most passionate way she could imagine. She forced her 14-year old child to stand on the side of a busy street wearing a sign that said, "I lie, I steal, I sell drugs, I don't follow the law."

Dynesha Lax, of Fort Wayne, Indiana said that she had to use drastic measures to get her son under control.

"I decided he broke the law and they only gave him a few hours community service so I decided that we were going to wear a sign that says you looking for attention, we're going to get you attention," Lax said.

Lax felt that the court punishment wasn't enough. So, she then took matters into her own hands.

"What else more can I do?" said Lax. "They put him on probation and when they did probation they were quick to talk about the 300 some dollars you have to pay in fees, but nobody's trying to help me fix my son."

While passers by were shocked by the sign around her son's neck, police officers said there was nothing illegal about what Lax had done to her son.

"I'm hoping that having him out here is going to make it sink in," said Lax. "It wasn't for it to be a joke or anything funny. He just had to stand out here two hours and suddenly it blew up. Then again they've got their way of parenting and I've got mine. My object is to save my son."

Dr. Christina Edmondson says that the adults in the young man’s life may need to adjust the manners through which they give him love and attention.

“The adults responsible for loving, guiding and disciplining this young man need to get real about whose attention he is most earnestly seeking. Ironically, this mother is modeling attention-seeking behaviors through this desperate cry to get the system to work for her son,” says Dr. Edmondson. “The reality however is that parenting requires more than one or even several dramatic acts, but rather continuous modeling, reinforcement, and correction.”

Parental advocate, teacher and social commentator Miranda Kincaid also expresses concern about the mother’s behavior.

“At first, I was cheering ‘Go Mom’;however, the multiple felonies this young man already accumulated in his whopping 14 years, caught my eye. How does this happen?” Kincaid asks. “Mom thinks the courts aren't doing enough, but where is her role in this "wayward teen's" life? If she has time to monitor him holding a sign for two hours, she had time to guide him somewhere in his life.”

This desperate mother's efforts to manage her son's behavior appear, on their surface, to be hurtful and destructive. But while she might take criticism for her efforts to discipline her son, this is nothing to the criticism she might receive later if her son ends up a convicted felon. The criminal justice system isn't very nice to young black men, so there's no point in sugar-coating the amount of humiliation this child will receive if he continues on his current path.

Perhaps what this family needs is counseling. It takes a village to raise a child, and it usually takes a village to destroy one. It’s hard, from the outside, to look at this family and put all of the responsibility for this unfortunate situation on the mother, the child or anyone else. What is definitely clear is that there is a problem and serious intervention is necessary to keep from ruining this young man’s life.

I recently saw a picture on Facebook that had the following words: “If you wouldn't make her a wife then don't make her a mother." I got the message, but to me this yet again another escape from accountability as women. "Make" Really? Make? My perspective is, "If he isn't willing to MAKE you his wife, then DON'T be WILLING to be his “baby mama!"

For some reason, I could not get past the word "make", and upon further reflection, the question became how can a man "make" you something that YOU'RE volunteering to BE? Oh yes, volunteer is the correct word. If we lay down with a man, and he is NOT your husband, and you have sex with him, you are VOLUNTEERING to be the mother of his child, since we know conception is a possibility when sex takes place.

You appealed to his lower nature. You had sex with him and didn’t make marriage a requirement. You continue to have sex with him and still don’t make marriage a requirement. You decide that you’re going to have his baby, and again you still aren't married because, again, you didn't make it a requirement, he leaves you. But everything is “ALL HIS FAULT!”

See how FOOLISH that sounds Sisters?

Why do we as women want men to take 100% responsibility for what takes place in OUR wombs? I am specifically speaking on those that we sent an invitation and gave an all access pass to. Why is that everyone ELSE has to accept the consequences of our decisions and actions? WE make the CONSCIOUS decision of who we allow inside our bodies. A man can NOT come in unless WE allow him too.

Contrary to what you heard, read or what your “Girlfriends” told you, no matter how you drop it, flip it and rotate it; that does NOT guarantee marriage. All it guarantees is that you will have had sex with a man that is NOT your husband. Let’s stop using our wombs as a down payment for marriage.

When a man is ready for a wife, he is more focused with how he works her MIND above anything else, While he understands that in her womb is where his legacy will be cultivated, he also understands that in her MIND is where his legacy will be conceived.

So Sisters, the power of choice is with us. We can either chose to be a “baby mama’, a “jump off”, a “side piece”, a “mistress” or we can chose to be a WIFE. Instead of telling him “if he liked it he should have put a ring on it……how about we LOVE ourselves ENOUGH to make that ring a REQUIREMENT?

Jakadrien Turner, the 15-year old girl who was accidentally deported to Colombia, has returned to the United States. She was sent to the country in May after she gave a false name to authorities, who then determined that she was an illegal immigrant.

Johnisa Turner, the girl’s mother, said that Jakadrien was on a flight from Atlanta. She is planning to meet with her daughter so she can ask “a gazillion questions.”

"I am very excited," Turner said. "I feel like a weight has been lifted. But at the same time, I won't just feel really, really good until I'm able to touch her. Until I'm able to put her in my arms."

Some have wondered how the young girl was accidentally deported. US and Colombian officials are blaming one another on who should be held responsible for deporting a minor to a foreign country. Jakadrien’s family is wondering why US officials didn’t do a better job of confirming her identity before sending her away.

Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the State Department, said that the case got their attention in December.

"We didn't have any involvement at all in this case until it came to light that there may be a problem with an American minor in Colombia, and that — and then we became involved both with Colombian authorities and with folks in Dallas," Nuland said.

The girl ran away from home more than a year ago, and was discovered in Bogota, Colombia. She was enrolled in the “Welcome Home" program after she arrived in the country. From that point, she was given a place to live and a job. When the government determined that she was a US citizen and a minor, they put her in their welfare program.

She was not fluent in Spanish, and her grandmother hunted her down on Facebook.

"She looks like a kid, she acts like a kid. How could they think she wasn't a kid?" said Lorene Turner, the girl’s grandmother.

Missing Boy’s Mother Told Cops She Had No Children

The mother of a one-year old boy who’s been missing in South Carolina told police that she had no kids when she was first questioned.

The mother, 22-year old Zinah Jennings, was questioned by police about the boy’s disappearance. At first, Jennings said she had no kids, then she said that her son was in Atlanta. After that, she took the police to an apartment complex where she says she dropped the boy off, but had no idea of the number of the apartment where she dropped off her child.

The woman’s mother says she hasn’t seen the baby since Thanksgiving. The mom is being charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. Dogs are being used to search the woman’s home.

The world watched for years as Oprah struggled to lose weight during her time on the air, but during that period, Oprah was just onefamous black face in a sea of white faces. Oprah wasn’t the norm or the rule.

But with Jennifer Hudson becoming the face of Weight Watchers, Mariah Carey signing on as spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, and Janet Jackson doing ads for Nutrisystem, black women are the new faces of weight loss in America.

The first black woman to debut as a voice for a weight loss product was Queen Latifah, who enjoyed the top spot as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig a few years back. After her highly successful stint as spokeswomen, many other black women began following her model and cashing in on their desire to shed those extra pounds.

While some worry that the number of high profile African American women selling weight loss products will come at the expense of the self-esteem of young black women, others view the trend as marketing genius.

Talking about the loss of a loved one is extremely difficult. Even more challenging is having a conversation about death with small children. We’ve lost several family members this last year, and our oldest son, Roland, has been very perceptive and in-tuned with my grieving process.

My father, Dr. Manning Marable, was one of the most influential role models in my life. He passed away in April and my emotions have continued to be a roller coaster ride of cherishing and reflecting on great memories to being uncontrollably sad. There are many moments when I sit quietly on the sofa and reflect on how much he blessed my life. My heart aches from his passing, but my family and I have found strength in remembering the times we shared and how he chose to express himself and live on earth.

As parents, we often want to shield our emotions away from our children, but during the grieving process it’s difficult to hide your feelings. Children are so inquisitive and aware of their environments. Over the last several months, Roland has raised many questions about dying. I’ve found that being truthful, open about the topic to our oldest son, answering any questions that he might have, and keeping the lines of communication open, has been the best way to talk about the loss of a loved one.

In the most painful moments of your life, smaller children are curious and have so many questions. It’s been a learning experience to discuss death with our children, especially our oldest, because he does not have sensitivity filters and is very curious about the topic.

One evening, not too long ago, Roland was sitting in his bed writing a letter. “I’m writing a letter to Pops,” Roland said. I was startled for a moment, but was touched by his comment and believed that this was part of his own grieving process.

What’s been working for us is to talk about Pops. We share memories and stories in order for our boys to know him and learn of his accomplishments. It’s my hope that by continuing to do so my Father’s legacy will continue to live on through his grandsons.

Through my grief, I’ve found comfort in talking about loved ones who have passed. How have you dealt with talking to your own children about death? How have you found strength to heal in your own grieving process?

After a woman discovered that her boyfriend was cheating on her, she apparently grabbed the shoes that have spawned violence, arrests and even a fake murder, and set them on fire as retaliation --- posting the pictures on the social networking site with the warning below:

We’re not sure if that was the smartest thing to do, but let’s hope that this doesn’t spark the kind of violence that this shoe is known to cause.

Last week, the 51-year-old despicable POS walked into a police station in Grand Rapids, Michigan and confessed to having had unprotected sex with "thousands" of women he met over the past three years without telling them he's HIV-positive. He told police his plan was to infect them with HIV and kill them.

Right before he surrendered to police, David texted one of victims: "Turning myself into the law, my life is over," the message said. "Take care. Always love you." Is there a sentence befitting of this crime? The death penalty (which is illegal, by the way, in Michigan) would be too easy.

Happy 57th Birthday, Denzel!

Denzel Washington, the man with the perfect smile and flashing eyes, and enough charisma to make the ladies swoon for at least the last two generations, turns 57 today!

The “Training Day” star continues to make major moves in the Hollywood, set to star in two movies in 2012, Safe House and Flight, and is also landed the starring role in a TV-to-screen adaptation of the 80s classic, Equalizer.

Besides being an actor, producer and screenwriter, Washington is also known for his philanthropic work, specifically his long-standing support the Boys And Girls Club. He has long advocated for the organization, crediting it with helping him to navigate his youth. He also gifted $2.25 million to the Fordham University theater department.

Denzel and his beautiful wife, Pauletta Pearson Washington, have been married for 28 years and have four children.

Woman Killed On Christmas Day Carrying Her ‘Dream’ List

Donna Fountain, 38, was run down on Christmas Day,leaving behind an 8-year-old son and a “Dream List” --- both a testament to her hard work and zest for life.

A hit-and-run driver in Crown Heights rammed into her and sped away, leaving her gasping for life on the pavement. The suspect was driving a gray car and police are scanning traffic surveillance cameras to catch them.

“They are 98% certain they can catch who did this,” said the victim’s brother Ben Fountain, “They took it upon themselves to take a life. How could they not stop?” he asked to NY Daily News.

Her “Dreams”: find a great job, buy a house by age 45, start a sanctuary for gay and lesbian teens, marry the woman of her dreams and watch her son, Elijah, graduate from college.

“She gave everything she had to her son and worked so hard for him,” said her friend Dena Baveghems, 28.

Donna, employed by Partners in Care, was on her way home after working the early shift to ensure she was home to open gifts with Elijah.

Last night I was in a trance watching the newest cast member of Love and Hip Hop berate and instigate a fight with Kimbella. Erica, a Hip-Hop model was extremely upset with Kimbella and all of the “Video Whores”. According to Erica, Kimbella and her ilk have ruined the industry for “real Hip-Hop models”. Apparently there are levels of Hip Hop Modeling; who knew? Crickets were chirping in the background as I side-eyed the television.

They fussed back and forth about sex, baby daddies, and all their private business before the first glass was thrown. These pretty girls in stilettos, designer dresses, faces full of makeup, and perfectly coiffed hair were throwing blows like grown men. While watching this train wreck all I could think was, “You all are too pretty to behave like this!”

Pretty Girls are well behaved, classy, delicate, and elegant. These women should be enjoying the “fabulous” life. You would think wealth and opportunity would bring about a sense of appreciation and pride. Their new found celebrity should be used as stepping stones for career advancement and a better life. Instead these pretty girls choose to behave like Ratchets: rude, simple, tacky, and unattractive.

At 30-year’s old, I can look at these girls and shake my head, because it’s merely something to laugh and talk about with my friends. I wonder what the 13-year-olds are thinking while watching these shows? Do they think these girls are pretty cool? Do they throw their plastic cups with clinched fists in the cafe during lunch while screaming obscenities? In my day, girls were “too pretty” to throw bows. We were not going to mess up our faces, clothes, or lives because of foolishness.

This evening World Hip-Hop released a 46 second video of Erica attacking her child’s father, Raul of the Terror Squad. As I watched yet another train wreck all I could think was:

“When did acting like a BRUTE become CUTE?”

Kirsten West Savali: Is Paula Patton a Black Trophy Wife?

If I were Paula Patton, I would be embarrassed.

In an exclusive interview with Essence Magazine, the Mission Impossible 4 actress’s husband of six years, Robin Thicke, managed to not only divulge intimate details of their sex life, but to paint his wife as nothing more than a hypersexual, replacement mommy-figure who introduced him to the world of Blackness.

Patton, through no malicious---but still very purposeful---intent of her husband’s, was cast as the Black Trophy Wife, valued because she grants him an authenticity, an entree’ into the world of soul, funk and R&B that he would not have been granted otherwise. He maneuvers her from her rightful place at his side, and pushes her to the front of his agenda to seduce the Black community into accepting him as our own ---that is, when his “mojo and swag” aren’t being occupied giving Patton “double-digit” orgasms.

He also reveals in the interview that she calls him ‘Daddy’ and he calls her ‘Mama’ because their respective parents didn’t play important roles in their lives, so they became each other’s replacement. For some reason, he doesn’t seem to realize that when compounded by race in a traumatized society his words are toxic. Their twisted dynamic is eerily reminiscent of a slave-owner/Mammie dichotomy and co-dependency---exacerbated by racial stereotypes---is neither attractive, nor romantic.

I enjoy Robin Thicke’s music, but I have no illusions that he will ever be Donny Hathaway or Marvin Gaye, or even Eric Benet or Rapheal Saadiq. Then again, neither does he, because according to him, his contemporaries are “Drizzy Drake and Chris Brown.” He doesn’t even take himself seriously.

Essence asked him to respond to the myth that there are “no good Black men,” Thicke had this to say:

“I think that’s ridiculous. There are so many good Black men out there that are hardworking, decent, and handsome, you know? To start that rumor is as bad as starting any other negative rumor. There are great Black men out there. There are only a few good White men -- trust me. (Laughs) Good luck finding a good White man who understands your journey. I only have three White friends. I’ve got twenty Black male friends, who are all good men who take good care of their wives, and good care of their children. I know amazing Black men...”

Good answer, Robin.

On the surface, this sounds admirable, but when placed in the same context as trotting out the number of his wife’s orgasms in a transparent attempt to co-opt the “Black Man-Sex God” myth, what becomes clear is Thicke is more interested in scoring “brownie” points (pun intented) with Black men, while still placing himself above them because he’s such a rare breed. Black men may be a dime a dozen, but white men like him? Now, we’re talking about a priceless treasure. Well, let him tell it.

The message to Black men is that he is not a threat; all he wants is exclusive membership privileges to Black America, and he’ll continue to sing our praises from Watts to Washington, D.C. In that one interview, Robin Thicke exposed his uncanny ability to insult our intelligence, minimize our value and destroy his credibility, and the tragic irony is that he probably thought he was showing the utmost respect.

In the same breath as he’s drowning Black men in compliments, he manages to slide in that he’s been with the same Black woman for eighteen years – a feat that none of them have managed to accomplish. He then insinuates that the reason there seems to be a shortage of “good” Black men is because maybe we’re not loving them right, or saying we’re sorry enough – the exact same stereotypical claptrap we read on a daily basis. I’m not sure when he became a Black relationship guru, but there are deep, traumatic fissures in the relationships between Black men and women that deserve more than a window-shop analysis.

Thicke shares with Essence that on his latest album, Love and War, he dedicated the song “I Don’t Know How It Feels to Be You” to Patton after they argued about his understanding of what it means to be Black. Her response was simple: “Robin, no matter how hard you try, or how compassionate you are, you’ll never know what it’s like to be a Black woman.”

With all due respect and admiration to the drop-dead gorgeous and talented Paula Patton, her bi-racial heritage (white mother, black father) ensures that she is the standard of beauty for both Black and White men according to a new study. Unlike the multitude of negative studies that invade the wombs, finances, education, sexual health and chances of love for Black women, the only studies that examine the lives of multi-cultural people, besides how beautiful they are, prove that they have better chances of success and will eventually be the majority of the population.

When was the last time that such glowing studies were conducted on the lives of Black women?

No worries, I’ll wait while you think about that one.

Even though she doesn’t like to be referred to as “bi-racial,” finding it offensive and arrogant, there is still an undeniably different trajectory for her. She can seamlessly transition from one world to the other without the scorn or side-eyes of people wondering why she was allowed in the front door. While I would never diminish her personal experiences as a woman of color in this country, nor minimize the nuanced racism that she has surely faced, the lens through which she is viewed is not definitive of many Black women. Thicke should not be confused by that fact, nor erroneously believe it grants him the authority to speak with any knowledge of what Black women should or should not do to get---and keep---a Black man.

I truly believe that love should be color-blind. We should be able to elevate the Black community without feeling as if we’re committing treason just because whom we decide to romantically love does not share our skin melanin-content. What Robin Thicke has done is no more than Will and Jada Pinkett –Smith’s propensity to indulge in limo-sex confessions everywhere from the red carpet to Oprah’s couch. My criticism of Robin Thicke is only race-specific because he demanded that it be so; he is asking to be judged on his ability to love a Black woman --- and how well he professionally competes against Black men; which is unfortunate, because authenticity, regardless of ethnicity, is much more readily accepted than cultural plagiarism.

If Thicke truly loves his wife, then he shouldn’t use her as career booster. If he really wants to show the world that he’s a “different kind of white man” then he shouldn’t reduce his wife to orgasms and lingerie, juxtaposing that visual with her morality and character. By placing emphasis on the fact that he’s “never dated a white woman and [doesn’t] want to” he makes it appear that Patton’s ethnic composition factors more heavily into their relationship than who she is as a person --- and leaves one compelling question: Does he truly love Paula, or does he love that Paula is Black?

Patton stands by his side, the beaming Black Trophy Wife of a Blue-Eyed Soul singer, and his professions of love for her in Black media have recently become the equivalent of nothing more than the desperate, patronizing insult “But, I have a Black friend.” In the past, and even in this interview, he speaks about loving her morality, strength and the fact that she taught him racial compassion. I think it would serve him well to stick to that script.

They make a beautiful couple and have been an example of a transcendent love that crosses racial boundaries and the five-second romances so common of many celebrities. Many times, he has braved the dangerous interracial media waters to make it clear that he deeply respects and loves his wife; It’s extremely unfortunate that this interview leaves the impression that he loves what her “Blackness” does for his career more.

Obese Black Women Have a Better Quality of Life

TUESDAY, Dec. 13 (HealthDay News) — Obese black women have a better weight-related quality of life than white women with the same weight, according to a new U.S. study.

The researchers found that black women are more likely to be concerned about possible physical limitations caused by overweight and obesity, rather than the potential psychological consequences.

In the study, investigators analyzed data collected between 2000 and 2010 from 172 black and 171 white obese women. The women filled out a questionnaire that examined five quality-of-life areas: physical function, self-esteem, sexual life, public distress and work.

Among all the women, quality-of-life fell as body mass index (BMI) rose. BMI is a measurement of overweight and obesity. However, at similar BMIs, black women consistently had higher quality-of-life scores than white women and self-esteem was particularly high among black women, according to Tiffany Cox, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and colleagues.

Oftentimes, I read or I hear some Black Women say that "All Black Men are Dogs". Well if you subscribe to this theory, then who is giving BIRTH to these so called dogs? If you call yourself a B**** then your ONLY OPTION is a dog. If you are the so called baddest b**** then your ONLY OPTION is the worst dog.

As women we have dual wombs, so we have the capability to give birth via our physical wombs and via our mental wombs. Our thoughts and actions give birth to certain types of behavior. If we sleep with men without discipline, if marriage isn't a requirement, because when a man marries a woman he is saying "I am taking responsibility for this woman." If WE as women don't make certain requirements and we sleep with men anyway, then say "we got dogged out;" well, who set the TONE for this type of behavior? If NOTHING was required to OBTAIN us, then NOTHING is required to SUSTAIN us.

As women, we are the second self of God. God didn't say I need a b**** to console me, comfort me.....you know why? Because a B**** can't do those things! How can a dog bring comfort to God? A b**** walks on all fours, so you can't elevate a man because you are already on a lower level.

You've placed yourself on the level of a canine Sisters! So you become a dog groomer. You wash a dog. You feed a dog. You train a dog, then you complain about "the dog in your house" but if you call yourself a B**** then you have INVITED this "dog" in your house and in your space.

I'm giving birth to God everyday via my mind. You have the power to do the same, but you have to re-evaluate your conception plan, and that starts with your mind and your thoughts. You won't get tired of being dogged until you get tired of being a B****. I never heard a man say "I can't wait to marry that B*****" or I want that B***** to have my babies."

When a man marries a woman he is creating a legacy. What type of legacy can a man create with a B****? When all a B**** can do is give birth to a pack of dogs?You will NEVER be a man's wife, if you are willing to be his B****.

I know Black Men call Black Women B**** as well, and I am NOT condoning that at all; however WE can't complain about them calling us B**** when not only do we ANSWER when called one, but we FREELY call ourselves one.

I've repeated the word b***** several time for a reason. To get you to see that no matter how you try to redefine it, all it is and ever will be is a female dog. Let's change the way we think about ourselves. Let's change the way we view ourselves. Why do we call ourselves EVERYTHING but what God created us to be? Why can't we be a Queen? Why can't we be Godly Women? Why don't we want to tap into that part of ourselves? We can't attract a Godly man being a woman of this "world".

So starting today, let's retire that word "b*****" when choosing to describe ourselves.Instead of being the baddest B*****, how about being what you REALLY are: a beautiful Black Queen. You'll get much more respect being a Queen than you ever will being a B****.

Married to the drop-dead gorgeous Paula Patton for 6-years, their white-hot romance (pun intended) has been on display for the world to see. Whether at one of her movie premieres or one his performances, their intimate connection has never been called into question.

His latest album, Love and War, is a testimony of their 18-year voyage together (they’ve been dating since high school) and he holds nothing back when sharing what make their relationship stand the test of time --- Spoiler Alert: He calls her mama and she calls him daddy. He also makes it very clear that he loves Black women and that “I’ve never dated a White woman. Don’t want to. I’ve never been on a date with a White woman.”

On Sex:

ESSENCE: If someone saw you whispering in Paula’s ear, what would you probably be saying?

THICKE: I can’t wait to get you home and love you up for two to three hours. I like to try to get her into double-digit orgasms as much as possible. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when I’ve got my mojo and my swag, it happens. Every few months it’s just like bam -- repeated. Repeated! I like her to just be going crazy in the bedroom.

On Black Women and Raising Inter-racial Children:

ESSENCE: What’s is Paula’s sexiest quality?

THICKE: It’s her intelligence and her strength. I’ve never met a stronger person who stands by their will and their moral values. She is such an amazing human being. Ever since I met her and we were 16 years old and she was the president of the Black student union and I was just a silly White boy who didn’t understand or have compassion.

I had no animosity, but I just didn’t understand the Black experience in America and how different it is -- and most White people can’t. You can’t understand it until you are with somebody every day and you have a child that you know is Black, you then understand that, wow, what a different experience Black people and in particular Black women have to go through.
I have a song on my new album called, “I Don’t Know How It Feels to Be You,” and she and I were in the middle of an argument and she said, “Robin, no matter how hard you try, or how compassionate you are, you’ll never know what it’s like to be a Black woman.” So I got up and I wrote this song in five minutes. The lyrics are: “I don’t know how it feels to by you, though I try my best to understand what you’re going through, I don’t know how it feels to be you. I can’t walk in your shoes. But, I’m trying baby. You know how much I love you.”

On Black Men:

ESSENCE: The media often tells Black women that they’re better off dating White guys. What’s your response to that?

THICKE: I think that’s ridiculous. There are so many good Black men out there that are hardworking, decent, and handsome, you know? To start that rumor is as bad as starting any other negative rumor. There are great Black men out there. There are only a few good White men -- trust me. (Laughs) Good luck finding a good White man who understands your journey. I only have three White friends. I’ve got 20 Black male friends, who are all good men who take good care of their wives, and good care of their children. I know amazing Black men. Maybe the women have to take better care of their men. Maybe you’re being too stubborn. Maybe you’re not saying you’re sorry. You have to take good care of him, too. You have to give love to get love.

Kirsten West Savali: Three White “Hoes” and Betty White: The Unspoken Double Standard

While sitting under the hair dryer Friday afternoon, I grabbed a stack of magazines that were haphazardly scattered on the small table to my right and began sifting through them for suitably mindless, I-work-hard-all-week-so-let-me-catch-up-with-fashion-and-entertainment chatter.

Apparently, the Universe decided that a mind was a terrible thing to waste because featured on the front inside cover of my magazine of choice was an advertisement for Hot in Cleveland, a sitcom starring the legendary Betty White, along with actresses Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves.

The premise of the show seems innocent enough. The lives of three white, 40-something American women — enroute to Paris to get their groove back — are forever altered when their plane is diverted to Cleveland, Ohio. They immediately form a contentious bond with White’s weed smoking, “grandmotherly” character, Elka Ostrovsky, and television-approved raunchiness and hilarity ensue.

Nothing to see there, right?

Wrong.

In the advertisement, the three younger cast members, in the white equivalent of coonery, pout prettily in festive Christmas sweaters with “Ho” emblazoned across the front, while White clutches her ball of yarn, oblivious to the shenanigans of her castmates. Some may wonder why this presented an issue for me and the explanation is simple:

Not in this lifetime, nor the next, would three Black women flank the sides of an elder basking in their promiscuity, unfettered by the leeches of societal judgment and scorn. What this advertisement showcases is the perceived innocence of white women — and hidden within the folds of that unspoken privilege, the lingering fear that mainstream media harbors for Black women and our alleged “hyper-sexuality.”

Let me be clear: Being cast as “hoes” is not a role that we should aspire to; however, it is a role that has been thrust upon us nonetheless. From the bold attire of Serena and Venus Williams to the objectification of random video vixens on BET, there is a fear, an anxiety, a powerful magnetic attraction that apparently makes Black women unsuitable for viewing audiences, yet in high demand just the same. Our marginalization as Sapphires, Jezebels, and Mammies, incapable of escaping the historical demonization of our wombs and sensuality — nor the disrespectful caricatures of our strength — is a reflection of how we are perceived in society at-large.

Throughout history, our sexuality has proven to be so fascinating and hypnotic, that Black curves can only be shown with the strict caveat that they should never be honored nor respected. With this is mind, I find it no small coincidence that both our motherhood and womanhood are consistently under attack. How better to make us doubt our collective self-worth than to trivialize and taint our most sacred, while simultaneously manipulating the media so that we’re perceived as weapons in our own communities?

The fact that acclaimed actress, Viola Davis – who many expect to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her stereotypical Mammy performance in the controversial film, The Help – will arrive in all her evening finery, while still being identified as a mere servant by all in attendance, proves one thing:

The asexual Black woman, unwilling to break the mold that has been cast for her, satisfied with bursts of rebellion that do nothing to challenge the status quo will always be deemed worthy of veneration — while our sexuality will continue to be suppressed and villianized.

We could cast the lion’s share of the blame on a color-blind misogyny that serves as the foundation of this nation’s patriarchal socio-political constructs — but that would be a superficial claim at best. There is something more sinister lurking in the shadows; a danger in acknowledging the innate sensuality of Black women that lives beyond strip clubs, porn and reality television. Since the days of slavery, and subsequently Jim and Jane Crow, the devaluation of Black women has been systemic, malicious and purposeful.

Why?

Because we are the backbone of our communities. Whether we are sisters, daughters, mothers, lovers or friends — or a hybrid of all five — a Black woman confident in her sensuality, comfortable in her strength, secure in her beauty and in love with herself is perceived as the key to the continued progression and elevation of Black communities, thus rendering us a threat to the intrinsically racist status-quo in this country.

White women in entertainment and in America, as a collective, have been granted license to portray themselves as “hoes” and “sluts” without the negative historical implications associated with the names; and, quite frankly, that’s their business. If they want to disrespect themselves for a chuckle and chump change, then a power fist to them. What they choose to allow themselves to be called is only relevant here because it reveals a blatant hypocrisy.

Disrespect implies transferred ownership.

It is considered disrespectful to call a Black person a “nigger” because many of us accept ownership of the word and all it’s violent implications. It is disrespectful to call a woman a “bitch” because many of us accept ownership of the word and it misogynist undertones. It is considered a flagrant offense to call a Black woman a “ho” because that is a label that has been branded in our psyches since plantation owners crept through the fields and into our beds uninvited. To feel disrespect, one must feel that the word is abusive, and to experience that abuse on a visceral level, one must feel that even if it’s not true of them as individuals, it is often true of their kindred in the collective.

White women can refer to themselves as “hoes” tongue-in-cheek, because they do not accept ownership of the word --- it is not disrespectful, because, in our twisted society, it is a word that does not belong to them --- it belongs to us. They are free to sexually express themselves, without fear of judgment and repercussions, because their sexuality has been ruled safe for mass consumption; conversely, the power that is sheathed in the sexuality of Black women cannot, and will not, be harnessed, and that will continue to affect our presence in the media until our economic conditions reflect our true value.

Do I believe that being labeled a “Ho” in a national multi-media campaign should be a goal that Black women strive to achieve? Absolutely not. From being cast as the “dangerous” face of abortion, STIs and teen pregnancy, to hyper-sexed gold-diggers who dream in dollar signs, our sexuality is consistently shackled and stoned in the court of public opinion. We don’t need to wear garish sweaters spelling out the words in bold print; to be considered whores, all many of us have to do is step beyond our front doors --- or, unfortunately, remain locked behind it with men who do not appreciate our worth.

These three white “Hoes” illuminate the toxic, double standard that suffocates Black women in the media in a way that no Hip-Hop video nor reality show ever could. What becomes evident upon cursory inspection is that, in our society, “Ho” pertaining to white women is considered safe comedy, while for Black women it remains a sweeping condemnation.

And there is absolutely nothing “hot” about that — in Cleveland nor anywhere else.
